Integration (SMI) group is seeking an experienced Materials,
Physics & Processes Engineer to join our team in Kent or Tukwila,
Washington. - The SMI group is considering a broad range of
experience for this position including: Senior or Principal.About
Us:SMI is a section of Materials & Manufacturing Technology, all
within Boeing Research & Technology (BR&T). - BR&T's scope
of work spans initial concept to feasibility/development to
production implementation and support. - Customers include all
other divisions of Boeing, US DoD (Department of Defense), NASA
(National Aeronautics and Space Administration), DARPA (Defense
Advanced Research Projects Agency) and other organizations. -SMI is
a microcosm of BR&T but with higher focus on concept
generation, feasibility and technology development and maturation.
- We provide breadth and depth of knowledge and capabilities to
help internal and external customers: with efforts spanning "clean
sheet" design to correcting existing problems; to win contracts; to
succeed. -Recent and on-going projects in SMI cover a wide range of
interesting topics, including femtosecond and nanosecond laser
processing of materials, an autonomous air-dropped amphibious
vehicle, robotically-driven composite parts fabrication, UV-based
sanitation systems for public transport, innovative missiles,
specialty coatings and appliques, lightweight transparent armor,
specialty laminated composite structures, photolithography for B1B
bomber parts, and smart heating blankets used to slash the cost of
composites processing. -SMI has earned a reputation within Boeing
as a go-to organization for fast development of innovative
materials and processes. - Our hands-on approach to development is
enabled by our Advanced Materials, Advanced Development and Laser
laboratories. - Engineers work side-by-side with experienced and
capable technicians in these labs to create a broad range of new
products and capabilities, like those noted above. - Directly
resulting from this collaboration, over the last 4 years SMI
teammates submitted 130 Invention Disclosures and were award 102

senior engineer in MP&P (materials, physics, and processes) you
will mentor and lead a team of innovative and dedicated engineers
and technicians to solve complex technical challenges in materials
and manufacturing technology areas. You will help SMI to evaluate
emerging technologies for potential applications to business needs,
and consult on the integration of new technology into Boeing
products. You will use your innovation, creativity and technical
skills to develop new capabilities and products to enable new
business capture for Boeing. With our variety of work, you won't be
bored!Position Responsibilities:
- Coordinates definition of complex requirements for tools,
equipment, materials, parts and processes used in the manufacture
and engineering design of products and approves their use
- Establishes standards for specifications and other documents to
manage the deployment of tools, materials, parts and processes
- Represents the Company on technical committees to develop and
revise industry standards
- Promotes standardization across the Company
- Consults on evaluation of emerging technologies for potential
application to business needs
- Establishes standards to qualify new tools, equipment,
materials, parts and processes to meet requirements
- Consults on integration of new technologies
- Reviews and approves test and audit programs to qualify
suppliers to applicable requirements
- Coordinates complex analysis to determine performance or
reasons for failures of tools, materials, parts or processes
- Coordinates broadly based corrective and preventive
actions
- Consults on design, development and qualification of
sophisticated computer and production systems to satisfy user
requirements
- Uses project management tools to meet cost, technical and
schedule requirements
- Incorporates environmental health and safety, LEAN and Quality
principles into (1) materials and processes, (2) research, design
and qualification, (3) work procedures and (4) labs and office
areas. Consulates with others, establishes work statement, defines
strategies and/or provides discussion with peers while keeping
management informedThis position is hybrid. This means that the
selected candidate will be required to perform some work onsite at
one of the listed location options. - This is at the hiring team's
discretion and could potentially change in the future. - This
position requires the ability to obtain a U.S. Security Clearance
for which the U.S. Government requires U.S. Citizenship. An interim
and/or final U.S. Top Secret clearance Post-Start is required.Basic
Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):
- Bachelor's, Master's or Doctorate of Science degree from an
accredited course of study, in engineering, computer science,
mathematics, physics or chemistry
- 9+ years of engineering experience working on an integrated
product team with aerospace materials and processes
- Experience with material processing for metals (e.g., welding
forging, heat treat, machining, forming), polymers and composites
(e.g., autoclave curing, lay-up, co-curing, repair), sealants and
finishes processing (e.g., plating, painting, surface preparation,
fay surface sealing, fillet sealing), and ceramic (e.g., high
temperature processing, machining) and electronic materials (e.g.,
soldering, printed circuit board cleaning, conformal coating), with
an emphasis for space applications.
- Experience with design concepts and techniques (e.g.,
concurrent engineering and Design for Manufacture/Assembly)
- Experience with the responsibilities and tasks performed by
various Engineering departments/disciplines (i.e. design,
manufacturing, materials, process, and physics, etc.)
- Experience interacting between departments/disciplines and how
their products/processes affect one another and impact
non-engineering processes (e.g., Operations, Logistics,
Business).Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):
- 15+ years of related work experience or an equivalent
combination of education and experience
- A bachelor's degree or higher in Electrical Engineering,
Mechanical Engineer, or Materials Engineering
- Active Top-Secret Clearance
- Experience in electrical, electronic, electro-mechanical,
electro-optical systems
- Experience with advanced materials processing technologies
- Experience with advanced manufacturing methods
- Experience in program management of engineering teams
- Experience with engineering drawings and specifications
- Experience with programming/CAD tools for design, data
acquisition, and data analysis (e.g. AutoCAD, MatLab, COMSOL,
etc.)
- Knowledge of material structure, properties, performance and
processing of ceramic powders, monoliths, composites, foams,
coatings, thermal protection and/or thermal control materials,
components and sub-assemblies.
- Ability to measure and predict the impact of material and
processes on components, assemblies and systems.
- Knowledge of organic chemical processes (such as top-coating,
priming, surface cleaningTypical Education/Experience: -Senior
(Level 5)Education/experience typically acquired through advanced
technical education from an accredited course of study in
engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry
(e.g. Bachelor) and typically 14 or more years' related work
experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and
experience (e.g. PhD+9 years' related work experience, Master+12
years' related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is
the preferred, although not required, accreditation
standard.Principal (Level 6)Education/experience typically acquired
through advanced technical education from an accredited course of
study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or
chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 20 or more years' related
work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education
and experience (e.g. PhD+15 years' related work experience,
Master+18 years' related work experience). In the USA, ABET
accreditation is the preferred, although not required,
